Never forget – 77 years after the end of the Second World War, concentration camp songs commemorate the victims of Nazi persecution. Unique song documents from the Buchenwald concentration camp have survived, providing an insight into everyday life in the camp and the prisoners’ self-perception. The song collections were made in secret between 1938 and 1945 and survived the war hidden under floorboards and in bread bags. After liberation, they ended up in archives around the world. As part of a doctoral project at the University of Osnabrück, seven collections were compiled and indexed. A selection of the songs will be played at the Osnabrück Peace Day concert.
Each recorded song tells its own story and opens a window into time. The creations express the fears, wishes and hopes of the prisoners and bear witness to individual and collective attempts to come to terms with imprisonment. The songs are correspondingly diverse, ranging from dashing marches and longing tangos to cheerful mazurkas and intimate lullabies.
