Anti-Semitism has become acceptable again in Germany, even commonplace. It is no longer just the internet hate comments of a few rabble-rousers who “rant” about biological pests, demonic perpetrators of the pandemic and the climate crisis. As various studies in recent years have shown, anti-Semitic ideas are spreading in Germany and anti-Semitic conspiracy myths and Holocaust relativizations are on the rise in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. According to a recent survey by the World Jewish Congress, one in five adult Germans hold anti-Semitic views, the proportion is even higher among young people and knowledge about the Holocaust is increasingly declining.
How can this alarming development be counteracted? Do we need stricter laws and more consistent prosecution of criminal offenses? Or can anti-Semitism be countered with enlightenment, politics, education and the development of the beauty of Judaism? Prof. Dr. Julia Bernstein, Dr. Franz Rainer Enste and Viktoria Ladyshenski reflected on these questions.
