“What we see is what we are.” – Observations from the European periphery

Lecture to mark German Unity Day, featuring

Georg Franzky Cabral

German-Portuguese writer and cultural manager

Prof. Dr. György Széll, Osnabrück University

Portugal’s history is defined by its peripheral location and centuries of colonial history. Its more recent history was shaped by an almost 50-year dictatorship, which came to an end in 1974 with the Carnation Revolution and enabled Portugal to join the then European Community in 1986.

Since then, Portugal – not only from a German perspective – has been a ‘European lightweight’ in a constant state of political, economic, social and cultural ups and downs. Both the city and the University of Osnabrück have been connected to Portugal in many ways for decades.

In his lecture, the German-Portuguese author and cultural manager Georg Franzky Cabral focused on the little-known relationships between Portugal and Germany in the 20th century. He himself, who has lived in Portugal since 1998, is a living example of these relationships with his Portuguese wife and their daughter.
